Toland Way Elementary

Grades 5 & 6 — Eagle Rock

Toland Way Elemantary was our pilot Wild Classroom Project school garden. This garden was built in 2023 at the behest of the school’s energized leader, Principal Elliot Cruzata, who was eager to introduce California native plants and environmental literacy to his school’s curriculum. This 1600 square foot garden sits on a Northwest facing slope above Glassell and Highland Park.

Built on a small, overgrown, fenced-in area beside the school’s vast, sweltering blacktop, this garden took its planting cues from its location, mimicking the companion plants found near oak woodland on north facing slopes of Los Angeles.

Added to the keystone species is a rich assortment of Salvia, mallow, Encelia and essential ground covers like Epilobium canum, Stipa, and native wildflowers. It’s a tight squeeze for a class of 27 kids, but with seating areas and some dedicated footpaths, it’s able to double as an educational space and rich habitat.

“We are deeply grateful for David’s partnership and for the ongoing impact of his work with our school. His dedication and expertise have provided our students with an outdoor classroom that will continue to inspire curiosity and stewardship for years to come.”
